I have a 1962 classic that I have owned for 3 years now, first year I owned it I drove it nearly everyday.  This past fall I got into it and the push button start did not work.  I have ruled out the neutral safety switch.  I can jump the starter relay and it will start right up.  Figured I would check here to see if anyone has any thoughts before I start chasing gremlins.

By "neutral safety switch" do you mean the vacuum neutral switch that is located on the engine next to the carb?   To test its function disconnect the wire from the switch and ground it.  If the car now starts the switch is defective.

If that switch is good (as above) I would start checking continuity in various sections of the starting circuit.   Joe

left side pushbutton automatic shifter? i had a 62 Ambassador 400 with that. loved that shifter.

there's a momentary-contact switch under NEUTRAL, and also a vacuum switch (that if i recall looks exactly like the brakelight switch) screwed into the manifold, so that you can push NEUTRAL when the engine is running without grinding the starter.

either of those could fail, but imho most likely the vacuum switch. like joe says, jumper it out and see if that solves it.

I did bypass “ground” the wire from the vacuum neutral safety and it still doesn’t start.  I will look into the switch under neutral and start chasing wires.

It’s a real pain having to get under the hood to start it every time.
