1961 American oil filter pics

Thanks for the help.  Would they have ran this on the passenger side(right side ) on newer models ?

All I've ever seen are on the front left corner of the engine, L-head or OHV. Of course the filter was an option up through about 1962. While all the factory installs I know of were front left, a dealer could have installed one on the front right. I'm not sure if the mounting holes will work on the front right though. Two issues I can see with a front right install. You can't install an AC compressor later without moving it, and the return path of the oil may be affected. It should be under pressure and not matter, but mounted on the front left it has a less restricted return path. The filters all have an anti-drainback valve, so just the line itself may drain.

The filters are getting harder to find, but most commercial truck supply houses can still get them. They are used on some industrial engines, particularly those used to power older refer trailers. I used to order 2-3 at a time. If I were adding a partial flow system now I'd use a current model remote filter adapter and plumb it like the old one. You can use flex hoses with adapters and mount the filter base wherever you want, but I think I'd make a bracket to mount it just like the factory filter with hard lines. You'd have to look real close to realize it's not a factory base, and filters could be picked up anywhere (most remote bases use a common Ford filter).

Those look like rubber oil hoses attached to the filter plate which I'm pretty sure the factory wouldn't have done.  Either a dealer add-on or the work of some previous owner.

L-heads may have been mounted on the right side. I know all the OHVs I've seen have it on the left. My 61 L-head had a filter, but no photos and I can't remember what side. Was my first Rambler, and I only had it three years. Got one with an OHV after that and never wanted another L-head to drive!
