Does anyone know a part# for the front shocks or a shock that will work? They are 16 1/2 extended 10 1/2 collapsed. This I'm sure will sound stupid but when I go to the parts store I find that the parts that fit is for a rebel not a rambler. So is it correctly called a 1959 Rebel Rambler Wagon? Thanks!

Whatever the car is it's called a Rambler first.
In 1959 the was the Rambler 6 and the Rambler Rebel basically the same car, but the Rebel is a V8. Then you have the Rambler American, totally different car from the Rambler 6 and Rebel. And you also have the Rambler Ambassador, a lot like the Rambler 6 and Rebel, but longer wheelbase. The Rambler 6, Rambler Rebel, And Rambler Ambassador all used the same shocks in 1959. To find the correct shocks in a catalog you need more than just the extended and collapsed specs., you also need shock body size and attaching method on each end also. |

Assuming you have the "big" Rambler and not the American, the Rebel shocks will fit. The six and V-8 models used the same shocks, no difference. The parts catalog people were probably confused... That's why AMC renamed the Rambler to Classic in 1961, to prevent confusion... and the Classic got a V-8 option instead of the six and V-8 sold as different models.

Thanks! It appears that the front shocks are obsolete for said models. I know about Galvins and a few other after market places but they are pretty high. I was wondering if there is a cross ref or one that will work. Tried several auto parts stores around here with no luck. One was pretty close but the extended and collapsed were about a inch off.

Search some of the shock companies. I know there are pdf catalogs online.
You have two important numbers, you now need to know if the shocks mount bayonet or ring or crossbar. Then you can match something up. When faced with multiple choices try to pick what is closest sized car to yours. Some of my terminology for shock ends is likely different from what you may see in the catalogs, I'm a bit off on that kind of stuff |

See this thread -- same problem, different car, but the solution should work for you.

I think he meant this one
http://theamcforum.com/forum/front-shocks_topic68069.html I thought they were for the same car by the same user just posted 2 times. As for price on parts for older cars sometimes you just have to suck it up and pay as that is the only part needed around. Dave ---- |
