In your area can you find someone who rebuilds generators?

Could you adapt a temporary alternator and then change it back for originality later? Then you would have a backup if it happens again.

When you say burned up the generator do you mean the field windings? That would take them a while to rewind and cost a few bucks providing you can find anyone around that still does that. Brushes and bushings you might be able to do quite easily and if need be have a local machine shop clean up the commutator. If the armature is gone then obviously you will be looking for a replacement.

Another option might be to compare generators from a 50's gm product to see if they are interchangeable.

Shoot. Had 2 good ones lying around and pitched them, I was tired of tripping over them. A Delco 3 wire Alt is the way to go. Fabbing up mounts sould be easy. You'll want to remove the external regulator and replace it with a two post junction block, One post supplied with battery power the other from switched Ignition. Hook up accessory's accordingly.

On the Alt, The big wire goes to the starter. The two other wires are tricky, One senses voltage from the Junction block on the Battery hot side, the other goes to the Gen light. The Gen warning lamp needs a one way Diode installed between the Alt and the Lamp. It took a little while to get mine wired correctly but much better then disconnecting the Batt every night! May have cost about $100

Use a Radio Shack #1N4001 diode. Note it will only function in one direction.

The field windings are burned and its not reusable.   I don't mind if I have to put a new delco alternator in there and I lose the original engine look. I just want to know exactly what people with the same engine have done. Parts numbers or fabricated.mount pictures. Etc.....
