Vague I know, but I couldn't condense this to a subject line. Disassembling a 195.6 to get to Forest for rebuild and with the exhaust manifold off, found a hose out of the block plugged with a big honkin' bolt. Right behind the gennie... What is it and where should it be run ?? BTW, the car donated the motor is a 59, but had a handwritten note form a PO on receipts that the motor was replaced in 61 or 62 IIRC ![]() ![]() |

Well my 63 motor has the hole plugged in that location and the later heater hose routing is all near the top of the engine, but it's a cooling system opening of some type. Maybe it was a cold weather car with an inline block heater at one time. Joe

That was my guess too Joe! I'd screw that hose fitting out and stick a pipe plug in. I've NEVER seen a 196 of ANY year with something like that.

Both of my spare 196's, and the one in my 64 440H, have a simple plug in that spot.

I think that's a left over hole from when the flathead had the water pump behind the generator.
My 56 Rambler ohv had the water pump there, but my 57 had it on the front of the block. I've seen pre 55 flatheads with the water pump behind the generator, a shaft went thru the generator and drove the pump.

It is indeed the leftover portion of an old tank-type block heater. They probably couldn't get the threaded pipe out of the block, or it was just easier to plug the hose. I'd remove it, and install the proper block drain plug, which is easy to find at NAPA.

That's right! It's not a left-over from the side mount water pump, it's a drain plug to drain most of the coolant from the block!!
There is a left-over from the side mount water pump, it's the "freeze plug" near (or in) the middle of the block on the left side. It has a wide flat surface around it and a couple places that look like a bolt would have went there -- almost like it was made to bolt a thermostat housing to (made for the flange on the pump). I think the plug could be popped out and the block drilled and tapped to install a side pump if you really wanted to. Sure would cool the block more evenly, but the head needs better cooling in the OHV configuration. The side pump was used on all 41-56 models of the engine, L-head and OHV (56 was first year for OHV, only year with side mount water pump). That's part of the reason they changed to the front mount pump, but reduction of complexity had to be a big consideration also. Quicker and easier to install the front of the block pump, and the lower hose length was reduced. |
