OK I did a search on this site and found that the older trunnions had grease fittings and or a vent fitting. I have a 69 Rambler and was looking at them and can not see any fittings or vents. It appears to have leaked some kind of lube from the top just below were the spring setts. Is there a way to lube the trunnion or must it be romved?
Thanks for any help

The units I have dealt with had a drain hole and no place to lubricate. I have had replacement bearings with a hole for a pinhole grease gun attachment, but I have never seen an original with a place to add lubricant. Edit: My experience is with 66-69 Americans.

Don, the small cars (at least Americans) did not come with grease fittings.  However, I have seen (I think on this Forum) others that have installed grease fittings on our style trunnions.  You may get someone replying who has done it or look in the search function and find a thread.  I could swear I saw a picture on this Forum at one time in the past.

I have one 68 AMX that has zerk fittings on the trunnions and on the upper control arm pivot bushings. Don't know how or when these were installed. None of my other 68's have/had this arrangement. I've rebuilt 6 or 7 Javelin and AMX trunnion front ends using the Pro-Thane poly bushing replacements, none of them had the zerks either. It's not that difficult to do, but it's not as simple as it looks either. If you decide to go the Pro-Thane route, PM me for a bunch of photos & descriptions I've put together to take the mystery out of trunnions.

As others have said, the Rambler, AMX, Javelin style trunnion didn't have grease fittings. Same with the 1970s AMC and identical aftermarket replacement parts

I added grease fittings to mine, but the rubber was replaced with bronze bushings that I machined for the job. The grease fitting greases the bronze bearing and thrust bearing in my redesigned trunnions (69 Javelin).
No issues in 7 years, handles extremely well.

Well I cleaned the trunnion housings and found what I believe is a vent hole. Is this the hole people have been putting grease in with a needle greaser? If so what kind of grease?

As you said, it's a vent hole. The trunion is under a plastic cap

If you grease the vent hole, all you'll do is have a pile of grease on the inside of the trunnion housing, right below the coil spring. It's shaped like a cone, the vent hole is to let water out when driving in the rain. The bottom of the trunnion cone has a plastic cap to keep the moisture out of the trunnion bushing. Doesn't always work! The actual trunnion bushing is in the area below the cone shaped part, it's about 4" tall. The top part of the steering spindle is what goes inside the trunnion bushing. Think of the trunnion as a multi part upper ball joint. The trunnion bearing supports the weight of the front of the car. The trunnion bushing allows the spindle to pivot for steering inputs. Not that complicated, just different. Nash/Rambler/AMC used trunnion front ends from the early 50's thru 1969 on many different cars.
