What type of gear oil should be used with the trac-loc differential? I guess it's called twin grip too. Thanks

One that includes a friction modifier.

Twin-grip was AMCs trade name for their traction control diff.  They used 2 types of units.  Early (up until about 1971) was the Power-Lock.  Those had a 2 piece case and 4 spider gears and were more dependable and longer lived units.  After that they used the Track-Lock, which had a 1 piece case and 2 spider gears.  They weren't as tough and wore out faster.

As far as lube, read the bottle.  Most 80W90 lubes on the shelf are compatible with clutch type diffs.  If you want the extra peace-of-mind, you can add a friction modifier.  I use one available from Ford with good success.  About $8 for an 8oz bottle at the dealer.

In my experience the gear oils that say they are compatible with limited slip still cause the clutches to grab too much. I find they all need a bottle of friction additive.

I've never seen a 8 ounce bottle from Ford. All the ones I ever used were 4 ounces and that is all you really need for a rearend. I too would not run a clutch type posi without it regardless of what the gear oil bottle says. Here's a link for it on eBay for $7.92 with free shipping. This probably about as cheap as you'll find it anywhere.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Motorcraft-OEM-XL3-Friction-Modifier-Additive-Limited-Slip-Differentials/263893670680?epid=1930509890&hash=item3d7149db18:g:zMAAAOSwuMRbfYJz:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true

Only problem I had with gear oil was using Royal Purple in a posi which started slipping very quickly. The bottle says no friction modifiers needed..... I replaced with Valvoline dino and the modifier and no problems aftrerwards

Not to hijack this thread, but with a twin grip, should you be able to rotate the wheels individually with them off the ground like an open diff? Or are they that tight that you cant? With mine jack up, it acts like a spool. (haven't opened it up yet to see what it actually has). Thanks

With the rear tires off the ground and in neutral or shaft removed. A non-posi diff tires will spin in opposite directions when one is turned. A tight posi will spin both tires in the same direction and feel locked. A worn out posi will be noticbly loose but tires will still spin in same direction

That is what I thought, but still learning and confirming on the AMC car stuff. I will pull my cover to see what is actually in there. Thanks

Dana used to publish a service check procedure for the 4-pinion Powr-lock and 2-pinion Trac-lock units.

I believe it was jack up one wheel, transmission in neutral, and turn the wheel that was jacked up off the ground. New units were supposed to take around 200 foot-pounds to turn, but performance was considered satisfactory down as low as 75 foot-pounds.

Basically you shouldn't be able to turn the wheel with your bare hands.
