    Posted: Jan/22/2014 at 8:01am
The front bearing retainer on my T-10 is broken. The snout got busted off and went missing before I got the transmission.
I'm going to make one out of piece of 4140 I've had in my shop for a while.
I need to know the overall length of the part so I can be sure to make it the right length.
All I have left of the original is the flange section that bolts onto the case, holds the front brg. and seal in place.
Can anyone out there give me an OAL ?

Thanks, Ron

Looks like 3 7/16" for the snout and the overall length is 5 inches.

The GM one is different......I have one that came with the trans....it's marked GM.  The snout is possibly the same OD/ID/length as AMCs' but the mounting flange is larger on the OD and the bolt pattern is no where near close to the proper retainer.
Anyone know what the O.D. of the snout should be ? There's nothing left of mine to get a measurement off. I read somewhere that there were 2 different sizes of throw-out brg, that were used by AMC.  I'm wondering if the I.D. of the brgs. were the same, just the outside sizes were different ?
Got my new one about 3/4 machined....just the snout OD and the bolt pattern left to finish up.
Was a good day to do it....got a blizzard going on outside....most of my clients are shut down until the storm passes.

Thanks, Ron

one that I have measures 1.405 outside and 1.180 inside should fit 69 and older One that I have on a trans measures 1.314 outside and I think inside is the same, 70 and newer. Measurements could be off a few thousandths.

If I remember  correctly, the larger diameter one is what came on 1969 and prior and 1970 and newer is the smaller in diameter.  In the AMC publication, Performance American Style it is suggested to buy the earlier (larger diameter) unit for "performance use".  I have had several 1970 up ones break over the years.....

Got the retainer just about completed.....made lots of chips....filled about 2/3 of a 5 gal. pail.

Just have to finish the OD, the OAL and drill the mounting bolt holes.

Takes a bit longer to do using non-CNC machine tools. I sure couldn't charge $ 30.00 to do one; not unless I wanted to go belly-up. I reckon on 3-4 hrs. total labour. The 4140 alone is worth
$60.00 before I even take a cut, plus the shipping to get it to me. I could have made it out of a cheaper grade of material but I want it to outlast me.

Looks like I'll be going with the larger OD on the throw-out brg. surface. The date codes on my trans case(s) are : Main Case T10P-1B,  A-10-68, Tail Section T10-P-7A,  E-10-68.....looks like mine was put together in '68.....going into a '70 Rebel.
