First it’s a work in progress, been too hot to work in the garage/shop, started a job so not much done to clean off the table.
From door entering to shop/garage. Shelves are on the garage wall side. Top shelves have parts that I will not need right away or at the end can be broken/crushed like door glass in the white blankets. Just inside the door looking across table to back wall. Shelves have tool broken down on shelves of body tools (hammers, dollies, vice grip C clamps, hand files), all air tools, electric hand tools (drills, grinders, buffers), any tools in a case (saw all, cirl saw, radiator tester, timing light, polisher), extension cords & drop lights, body work supplies (primers, thinners, bondo, sand paper, etc.)at the end and out of the way any parts I have for my Javelin project. Bottom shelves I have heavy parts like the T10, bell housing, presser plate & disc from car, A arms, spindles, rotors, etc. The wood shelf unit on the right was down the left wall the other half is in the tractor shed to put yard tools on. It has all my supplies, cans & bottles sorted out. IIRC I have books on 1 shelf. White bins up top have house things-electrical /plumbing/etc. bottom of wood shelf has heads, ALTs, Starters, head light buckets, etc. Under the table I have 27 gal bins with grab n go car/truck electrical supplies, race bin, and others I still need to go thru. From back wall looking to the doors, outside to left / garage to the right Did you catch the frig/freezer and the micro wave at the back? Every garage needs them! Dave ---- |

I would consider finding some horizontal filing cabinets. They come in 2-3-4-5 drawer types, and made to hold a large amount of paper. They make good storage for books. Around here you can find them cheap sometimes free. Even a regular filing cainet will organize small parts. The fronts give a uniform look and every thing is enclosed.

If me I would use shelves and for the smaller parts like in the blue cabinet I would put into a low long bin with a top like this 29Lx18Wx6H
I cant find a picture yet but something like an under bed storage bin but little HD than the ones I have found a pictures of. You can mark the front or look thru to see what is in side and can stack them. With the lids on the parts stay clean and out of harms way. http://www.rubbermaid.com/en-US/shop-products/storage-boxes/clever-store/clever-store-non-latching---opaque-lid Dave ---- |

Might not go with your décor but for our farm shop we picked up the high school gym lockers they had tossed and just removed the doors. I don't have a picture but they come in all sizes. Mine are about 12inx12in and about 6 feet high.

thanks but not wanting just cubbyholes........ Need true storage, some with doors, some for books, some for spray paints, etc. some for small parts. But since one has to find things being tossed or removed first, and be there at the right time and so on, the odds of that even working in the next few days are pretty much 0.
The options for true storage that is of uniform size, shape, etc. are pretty slim as i'm finding out. Even the Gladiator line is small - only a small amount of offerings. Even what they have when you get into the larger items ends up very pricey. They're pretty proud of the look of those cabinets. It appears no one must want decent metal storage for books, tools, parts of all shapes and sizes including hundreds of boxes small parts. I may end up sticking with the old kitchen cabinets and just hodge-podge them back together, hopefully finding a way to arrange things that takes a lot less space. I'd actually like to do at least part of it in the hanging cabinets similar to what Gladiator has - hang the cabinets, say the 72" tall units, high enough to put the jacks and stands under them. That way when it was time to clean, you don't have crap collecting under things that sit 1" off the floor. |

I was talking about the plastic bins on the right shelf unit bottom 3 shelves.
You can put the smaller parts in it with the number sticking up so you pop the lid and can see them. Mark the front so you know what is in the bin. Dave ---- edit: just saw the POS plastic shelf unit far right not that one the metal on the right. Edited by FuzzFace2 - Oct/02/2015 at 6:26am |

That's not a bad idea, something to keep in mind. I could always arrange it so a handful were in a cabinet simple to get to then extras in tubs like that. They'd be sealed and protected in tubs.
I should make a list of what I have, how much room, etc. and go from there.

Way back in the '80s when I was involved with modular homes, the plastic wrap that was on them to protect the insides in transit were held in place with 1x3s. I took all of them and figured out a way to make adjustable shelves with them. Take a 2x4 (or a 2x3) and place it vertically, from floor to ceiling, one in the front and one in the back. These will be spaced as far apart as the depth of the shelf. So, as an example, if the shelves are going to 24" deep, cut all of your 1x3s to 24". Nail these to your two by verticals with 1" between each. Run these from the floor to the ceiling. The space between teh verticals will determine how wide you want the shelves to be. Mine are 24" with one set being 36". Now make the shelves out of the 1x3 too. Nail a brace about three inches in from each end and place the cross pieces about 1" apart. Now you can adjust the shelves to whatever height you need just by sliding a shelf in and out. And you have floor space for teh generator, shop vac, etc. If I remembr the next time I am in the garage I'll take a picture of mine.
Later! Mr. Ed |
