I've got a '65 Marlin with a 287 and a 3-speed auto. I'd like to build this into a decently fun and reliable street car, and I'd really love to convert it to a 4-speed.

I know the bellhousing pattern for Gen1 engines doesn't fit Gen2/3. But it looks like they used the T-10 trans for both. I don't want to change the rear end, though I'd probably beef it up with a better diff and 1-piece axles.

My question: if I decide to go with a 343/360/390, and assuming I'd be changing the transmissions anyway, could I still use the older T10 torque tube setup with a newer engine?

I haven't done anything with it yet, so I'm just trying to figure out the best path to go down.

Finding the torque tube T-10 might be the problem. They were only used in the '66 Rebel and the '66 Marlin, to the best of my knowledge.
Buzzman72...void where prohibited, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

if you have the torque tube trans.. A spacer can be made to accommodate a later model engine.

A new episode of Junk Yard Gold aired last week and it was set in Hidden Valley Auto Parts, Maricopa, Az.  One of the cars they showcased was a 4sp 287 Classic.  The trans was still in it.  To the best of my knowledge.
