I got a power master for early pre 1988 700r4. I have a Advance Adapters kit on the 360. My dad had this done to the car some years ago before I got it.I had forgotten all about it until back in March when I started chasing a drive train vibration. I found 1 of the 3 torque converter to flex plate bolts busted off. But with what happened to you I will compare the new starter gear to the old gear. Thanks for your response. I joined a face book 68-70 and 71-74 Javelin & AMX group a few days back and they were talking about this company Showcars that has AMX/Javelin parts, just so happens they list a flex plate for 343 & 360 v8 for under $50. http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/amxjavelin.html.

As with any and all things, including vendors, a little research is due diligence...
And I wonder if this dude in Cincinnati / Norwood Ohio, which I know nothing about,
and who appears to have a small All AMC junkyard, may have a Core Converter you could get.
I have only seen his posting on FaceBook, Todd David Birch I think...

Silver 71 AMX, how did the mini starter screw up your flex plate ? I have a 70 AMX with a 360, I am putting new headers on it and figured since I am down there I would replace the huge original starter with a mini. Do you have any idea what caused your problem. I just installed a new flex plate and torque converter and don't want to trash anything.
Thanks

My guess is that it was probably on it's way out and I just didn't know it.  I got a new Power Master mini starter through Amazon which was probably why it didn't mesh correctly.  I should have paid more and gone through an AMC specific vendor.  I also have replaced the mini starter with another old style starter.  The original had a wire against the headers and there's another version of the same starter with the wire located towards the end and out of the way.

Either way between the teeth and the cracks around the crank mounting holes, it's done.  I ended up going through AMC Lives for their billet version.  I checked used plates, but it didn't really make sense to put a worn plate back on when both the engine and trans have been rebuilt.  Plus I'd rather not have to pull the trans back out any time soon.  The lead time on the billet pieces is "2-3 weeks" because the have to have it machined.  The parts kit with the bolts arrived already(the rep I talked to said it was to avoid loosing it while waiting for the plate and having to have it sent later.

Years ago I bought a billet machined steel flex plate from an outfit in Atascadero ca (when I still lived there) the car was eating the stock ones... anyway, it’s a 401, and the plate is heavy and requires a spacer between the bell housing and the block... I’m I loosing performance by running the heavier plate?

If the car is eating flexplates there is likely something wrong with alignment somewhere. Either the engine is incorrectly aligned to the transmission, or flexplate to the crankshaft. As per factory design all this is carefully done with a flexplate pilot on the crank and dowels to align the transmission. Sometimes with modifications or changed parts the careful factory design gets messed with. Aftermarket stuff rarely has the same level of engineering a factory part has, so if something has been changed somewhere look very carefully. I've seen disasters like someone hand grinding out a pilot of early flywheel to fit a late crank.

If you have an alignment problem the weakest link is being affected. If alignment is the problem and you put in a billet flexplate you will then likely find the next weakest link, probably the transmission pump drive bearing. Bad plan!

BTW I purchased a tranny adapter for a glide behind my 401, and it was crap for alignment. Had about .020" runout. Would eat a flexplate every 100 passes, and tore the pump drive out of the glide. I reworked it and dowel the adapter to the glide and now the runout is .001".

Hey Ken,  care to share how you established proper alignment? Also assuming I have proper alignment what would the disadvantages of running the billet be?
