Have kind of an odd question...

Does anyone know if the back side of the front bumper on 71-74 AMX/Javelins were painted black from the factory?

My 72 front bumper has been painted on the back side with a matte black finish.  It was pretty scratched up so I have removed most of it expecting to see a bunch of surface rust that someone was trying to hide, but the chrome actually looks pretty good.

Anyway, could not figure out why someone would go to the trouble of painting a perfectly good surface that no one would ever see.  Was wondering if it was supposed to be that way stock.

Thanks,
Jack

Usually that's what they do when they're replated. I've not seen a stock one painted but there are others one here that will know for sure.

No factory paint on the back of a chrome bumper.
74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

Yeah, my '69 bumpers were bare on the back side, but I painted them after they were rechromed.
Well, there was what I might call "chrome flashing" or partial chrome on the backside before rechrome.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.  Kinda what I thought.

Not sure if the bumper's been re-chromed or not but wouldn't surprise me--seems to be in great condition for a 47 year old part.

If the backside is smooth, it's most likely original chrome. If there are straightening marks on the back, then it's been rechromed, as that's a standard step in the replating process. The OE bumpers had plating on the back, but not as much as the front - so people often painted them to keep them from rusting.

Thanks.

Looks like a decent chrome plate to me--not as shiny as the front, but not bad. No straightening marks that I can see.

I can't remember the last time I saw the back side of a chrome bumper (or usually what I had for breakfast...) so I can't really compare it.  Think I am going to clear coat it and call it done.

I did a small edit, yes, agree, there was some chrome "flashing" or partial chrome of some kind on the back.
