The last number you have listed with a ?, is the body number from the line. Your vin is more like May, as my vin for 71 is around the ballpark as yours and it was late April.

71sc360 may have a bit of info, as he has been dealing with codes and such in his database.

71 Javelin SST body
390 69 crank, 70 block & heads
NASCAR SB2 rods & pistons
78 Jeep TH400 w/ 2.76 Low
50/50 Ford-AMC Suspension
79 F150 rear & 8.8 axles

832 is for Tan reclining seats. Yep, yours is probably a late spring 1968 production car.
74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

Stolen from mramc post:

DOOR TAG...BODY R020687..- L or R usually denotes body built in Lakefront Body plant.
AMC had 3 body plant; Kenosha main, Lakefront and Milwaukee and two assembly lines
, so this was coded to keep track of the bodies. Lakefront and Milwaukee bodies were built with interiors and VIN and had the the drive line assembled on the two lines in Kenosha main. East line small cars , AMX, Javelin, American, etc West line big car Ambassador, Rebel & Marlin, etc.

.MODEL 6839-7 - 68 for 1968 , 3 for 30 series, AMX, 9 for 2 door usually hard top 7 for high end interior trim. (OK , some year that a stretch )

...TRIM 832A. 8 for 1968, 3 for 30 series again , 2 for tan interior, A for all reclining Bucket seats

..PAINT 52A...

LAST NUMBER AT BOTTOM OF TAG E087830 - east line and sequential assembly number or in what order they car off the end of the line.

74 Javelin AMX

you'll eventually pay for it...
and not have it.

I sell a comprehensive AMC  number decoding book. I only have a few copies left, but made a deal with Olde Milford Press to print and sell them.

Note that AMC assigned VIN numbers as dealers placed orders, so those last six digits don't tell you much. VIN 000001 might have been the 107th car off the assembly line. That's why there is an unlabeled number at the bottom of the body ID tag indicating when it came off the line. As far as I know all other US manufacturers assigned the last six of the VIN during assembly,  so it is the final assembly number as well as a unique number for the car.
