Hi.

So I had my 73 Gremlin for a test run in the summer heat yesterday and it overheated. That's a problem for another day..

Anywhoo.. I started it up and the fuel pump was leaking right away. It was pumping out of the small hole on the lower back side of the fuel pump. When i revved the engine, it spilled more...

So since I'm new to cars, here are the stupid questions:

Anyone know how/if the over heating could have caused it to leak?

What is that hole for anyway? It seems to be threaded (might be mistaken) so, if i shove a bolt in there, the leak would probably stop.

Will this make my fuel pump even more sad in the long run?

Here's a photo. It's that hole on the top, to the left..

bog-standard late-model fuel pump. here's a NAPA version, below.

that hole is to let the evil spirits and ill humours out of the pump so they don't cause pollution etc and bend your crankshaft. but mainly it's there i think as the vent that allows air displaced by the pump diaphragm to equalize. plus the evil humors thing of course.

absolutely gasoline should not come out of the hole. that means that the pump has a torn diaphragm and simply needs to be replaced, because it's a crimped-together, unrepairable unit.

i would also see if there's gasoline in your oil crankcase. that would be bad. sniff the dipstick (that sounds obscene, somehow, sorry). should not smell liquid gasoline. if so, change the oil before driving.
