Hi everyone, Excited to be back after a while... after having my 79 Spirit sit dead for a couple of years because of problems with different mechanics (nightmare material really) I am finally reviving it and I couldn't be more excited.

Newbie question though, In the past whenever I changed oil I just went with a regular semi-sintetic 10w30 oil, but now and because I repaired the engie I dont know what to go for, did my research and some say to  to go for a 10w30 synthetic as the engine has been repaired and others included a local oil shop say that it would be counterproductive to go for synthetic as these engines were intended to run on conventional mineral oil ranging from 10w30 to 20w50.What is the best way to go?
I am also going to change the gearbox and differential oil and need some serious advice on this too... could not find any precise info beside having it being very viscous/ heavy duty grade, both the gearbox and diff are stock and have never been modified. (Sorry if this is the wrong forum category but didn't knew where else to ask).

Ps. I leave you with a picture of the last time I raced a while ago, it was fairly stock at the moment except from the exhaust system and it went pretty good Smile Mine is the only AMC I've seen here in Ecuador so always trying to put its name up high.

I have a T5 in my Eagle and run synchromesh lube in it - I tried other stuff, and even AMC changed specs at least 3 times and settled on a lube that synchromesh from Penzoil matches in specs. In other words, it meets the Chrysler specs which were based on their own and AMC specs - so it's pretty much a modern version of what AMC specified for the T5 and 4 speed from the later years.
Early cast iron old-school transmissions should use the specified lube.
Use a good hypoid gear lube in the differential. Pick a top brand - although most of them meet the specs of these differentials today.

LOL - that bit about synthetic is BS to put it nicely. I run synthetic in my Eagle.......
There's no such thing as "made to run on........" as far as oils in these engines. Modern oils meet those specs and synthetics often beat the heck out of those old specs. Many of us, and I mean many, run synthetic oils in our engines from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
I have for years.

As far as the viscosity or "weight" - 5w30 is best. That comes from an engineer, member of SAE, a guy who does testing of oils.

Here are some quotes from his blog a list of some of the best oils by his testing (WEAR PREVENTION which is all we care about - oil is to prevent wear so if an oil prevents wear to a higher degree than others, then it's a good oil - pure logic) - and the link to his blog.
The PSI ratings are the pressure an oil takes before it starts to allow contact and thus wear. Higher PSI is better, REGARDLESS of any other additives, etc.

5W30 is really the optimum motor oil viscosity overall, for most water-cooled gasoline engines, including High HP engines. Any viscosity thinner than 5W30, is thinner than optimum. And any viscosity thicker than 5W30 is thicker than optimum.

3. 5W30 Amsoil Signature Series, synthetic = 134,352 psi

4. 5W30 Renewable Lubricants Super High Performance Passenger Vehicle Bio-SynXtra motor oil = 130,436 psi

7. 5W30 Renewable Lubricants HD Super High Performance Bio-SynXtra motor oil = 125,250 psi

9. 5W30 Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage with MaxLife Technology, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved (silver bottle) = 123,470 psi

21. 5W30 Quaker State Ultimate Durability, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved, synthetic (originally gold, now green bottle) = 113,377 psi
