Waaaay back decades ago when I first worked as a mechanic - or maybe when I second worked as a mechanic, I needed a tool to get to those tricky carburetor idle mix screws and the often hard to get to idle speed and fast idle screws. I couldn't afford the commercial tools from Mac and SnapOn so decided to make my own.
I was reminded of this when i was digging through my screw driver drawer looking for another tool I had in there - this was buried. I took a length of brake line, an old speedometer cable core and a short quarter inch drive extension. I bent the brake line to shape, cut off the quarter inch extension into two parts - one end the male end the socket would go onto. I drilled the cut end just large enough for one end of the speedometer cable core to be pushed into. I turned a 45 degree angle on the cut end to match the flare shape on the end of the brake line. I then slid the speedo cable into the hole in the end of the cut off extension and soldered the cable into the extension stub. I lubed the cable a bit and slid it into the formed brake line. I found another fitting that screwed onto the flare fitting on the brake line and turned them together until I could just turn them on the brake line. I pulled the speedometer cable through this fitting combo and pulled while I soldered the cable into the fittings. The female part of the extension I cut off I formed a screw driver type end onto the cut end and soldered a piece of copper tube onto it to hold it centered on idle mixture screws, etc. Cost was my price on the brake line plus the extension I cut in two. Just a couple bucks, probably. Well, a picture is worth a thousand words - here's about three thousand worth? Home-made screw driver bit goes on this end - fits most idle mixture screws fine... This end is the handle end you turn....... |
