I have a nice comforting death wobble in my 73 Javelin at anything above 50 MPH. Upon inspection, it looks like all of the steering and suspension is original to the car...
When it comes to classic cars that aren't in museum quality, I'm a big fan of keeping it looking stock, but upgrading everything under the covers to more modern standards. I was searching the Internet and found this system: http://www.freakride.com/product/amx-independent-front-suspension-ifs-system-copy/ Has anyone had any experience with this company and product? Is it worth the cash? Any alternatives? I want this car to handle as best as possible.

Good quality products. I have had only good experiences dealing with Al. He is a good guy to deal with. We installed the IFS on a local AMC club members Javelin and he raves about how great it is and how the car now drives like it is on rails. Only you can answer if it is worth the cash for you. A slightly less expensive alternative would be the coil over conversion. We have installed it on several cars including my own and it has proven to be a nice upgrade.

I have the Freak Ride coil-over conversion and their tubular upper and lower control arms on my 70 AMX and IMO they are very well made parts. Not the lightest weight control arms, but very stout for sure!

I don't know of anyone that has bought the full IFS system and isn't anything less than thrilled with it.
However there are some downsides. The options for exhaust are limited, there apparently aren't any headers currently made that fit. Your options for oil-pans is limited as well, some aftermarket pans will not fit. The factory steering column will need to be modified. http://www.freakride.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Installation-Instructions-AMC-IFS-Systems.pdf http://www.freakride.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Installation-Instructions-70-Up-AMC-Control-Arms.pdf |

I am planning on one more build in my hotrod career. A 69 American.
I have just about convinced myself that I am going with a control freak front end. I plan on spending the day with these people in Auburn at the AMO Show, and sort it out. I have put over 40,000 miles on my 66 American with a stock front end with no issues but I am pulling the trigger with my "last" build. 1983 258/904, Ford Ranger rear end, Control Freak suspension, Vintage Air, Flaming River steering column, bucket seats. I was thinking of upgrading my wife's Focus to something more road friendly but after much thought I can build something more enjoyable for less money than a "new" car. Going to Texas next week to pick up my new car!!!! Having AMC Fun, Ollie |

It seems like a nice setup but the price is to steep for most people. I can't understand why power steering is an $800 option. That's just nuts to me. I was willing to trade money for time so I found a vendor that would design a Mustang II unit for my car which I just finished putting in. $2700 vs $9400 with power steering and brakes. It took a lot more work to install but it fits nice and will work with what I'm doing. I wasn't sure the Freak Ride would clear the oil pan since everything is so tight. IMO you're better off rebuilding the front end and use their coilover system with a close ratio steering box and upgraded sway bars. It will drive like a new car and handle very well all for way less than the IFS.

Thanks guys. It looks like the coil over conversion hits the spot. I don't want to be restricted to what I can and can't use and I'm not building the Javelin to be a racing monster, just a more up-to-date street car.

There is nothing wrong with the stock suspension they drive great. Just replace the worn out stuff. Putting front disc brake upgrade on any vehicle is a big plus. Having AMC Fun, Ollie |

I thought of saying that, but he wanted a Control Freak or similar setup. Nothing about our suspensions is bad and out dated. Outside of a lack of strut suspension, which is not perfect, all the components perform well when properly maintained. The weakness is, lack of adjustability with modern wheels and tires for track use. In fact my modded setup is basically built around the AMC design. If, i had not chose to use a Mustang GT rack and pinion setup, I would still be using the stock AMC spindle setup. But my mods would still be used, for my modern wheels and tires. Even though I will be using 18 rims, my original plan was 17", the mods basic changes can be applied to any 70 on up AMC. Just the lack additional of Castor adjustment. |

She ;)
So the steering and suspension is original and by that I mean from the factory. It's all pretty unstable at this point. My point of view is, if it still works then leave it alone, but if it doesn't work anymore, then why replace it with the same stuff when you can replace it with something better? (within reason)
