I am curious what type of park/directional bulbs would have been factory in 1970 for AMC cars that use amber colored park/directional bulbs, was it the painted bulbs or the tinted glass type? Anyone know.

Painted yellow as said. Not amber glass or amber colored paint. These are $$ when they come up for sale but you can make your own with a clear bulb and spray paint

Those painted bulbs flaked off early on. Bulbs were p/n 1034A or 1157A.
Concurrent was the amber glass versions, the 1034NA or 1157NA. Not sure why AMC used the painted bulbs at the time when Ford and others used the NA versions.

Just a footnote.. The A refers to Amber, meaning painted. The NA refers to Natural Amber for the actual amber glass. GM did the same thing with these two versions also, for some reason.

Has Concours judging guides got down into specifying the painted amber bulbs ? The day I brought my 69 AMX home (brand new) I changed out the "A" turn signal bulbs for a pair of "NA"s. The painted bulbs were more yellow in color and the NA bulbs looked so much better. Nowadays you have to look carefully at replacements that are sold in those parts store 2 packs. Some of the NA bulbs appear to be painted or dyed and not the amber glass.

George, Not only that, but the problem is, they don't care about those kind of details anymore as far as manufacturing goes. As long as it works, they throw it in the box. They are also chinese replacements for the most part, so that kind of says something also..

Hi,
I thought you might want to see a picture of NOS painted bulbs.

Got marked off at AMO Cup Class last year when my yellow Parking Light Bulb paint flaked off and fell to the bottom of the housing.  Ooops.

I remember receiving a notice from AMC about my AMX back in 1971.  It was recalled for the Turn Signal Bulbs needing replacing.  Could it be that the painted translucent yellow bulbs were not bright enough?  They replaced it with the transparent amber colored bulbs.  They did go to the clear bulb with amber lens in 1972.
