My distributor has the dual vacuum advance on it. Figured I would replace it when ready to install engine, but I'll see if I can post a pic of it later today.

Don't have the connection points, but here is a pic of the dual vacuum advance on the original 1111987 distributor for my 70 390 AMX. Aug 69 build so very early. I've purchased a single diaphragm vacuum advance and plan to either convert this distributor over when I'm ready for it, or find a different distributor. Can't locate a new dual diaphragm vacuum advance and I'm quite sure this one is no good after 50 years!

For a 1973 360/4 speed, would it use the '948 dissy or the '112, which is listed for 360 and 401 manual? There is no definition by engine for the '948.

Oh my, a little 'misleading' maybe in my chart... in the '1973' vertical column, those notes in dark blue near the top, are relative to the 2 different 1970 Distributors to the left of those 2 dark blue text notes, NOT relative to or anything to do with the 1973 applications. 1973 Distributors are below that, lines number 12, 13, 14, 15 1112112 = 1973 360-M, 401-M 1112179 = 1973 304-M 1112214 = 1973 304-A 1112215 = 1973 360-A, 401-A

Although this info is for a 1979 AMC and this thread is titled as being for 1967 thru 1974,
went ahead and posted this in this thread so comparison would be easier if one cared to do so. In 1979 AMCs & Jeeps were equipped with the Ford DuraSpark Distributor and Ignition System. Delco 1967 thru 1974, PrestoLite 1975 thru 1977 iirc, and DuraSpark 1978 thru 1991. This image is from the AMC 1979 Technical Service manual and shows Stock Timing Advance Specs. Although this image fails to show or say the actual potential combined Stock Total Advance which is the sum total result of Static Initial + Mechanical + Vacuum, which happens to be STOCK for the 1979 304 Auto a whopping 60 Degrees ! Image below shows STOCK Advance is 48 Degrees ! nominal at only 2,000 engine rpm... So why is it that it's said 34 is enough ? or 38 is too much ? When Stock AMC had 48 to 60 ? That poor little AMC 304 wasn't working against itself at all set-up that was was it ?... Oh, so I can see how just leaving the Distributor Mechanical & Vacuum Advance all stock, and then someone loosening the Distributor and cranking in more initial advance at idle to make it idle better, and adding even more to that stock 48 degrees at 2,000 & 60 degrees total would make it run even better... yeah...   |
